The vineyards of Château Mouton Rothschild are located northwest of Bordeaux, on the edge of the Médoc. The vines are planted on a narrow strip of land stretching approximately 80 kilometers in length and 5 to 10 kilometers in width, close to the Gironde estuary, whose waters help moderate temperature fluctuations. Bordered to the south by the vast Les Landes forest, the Médoc benefits from the mild influence of the Atlantic climate while enjoying natural protection from extreme weather conditions.
In 1855, the finest 61 wines of the Haut-Médoc were classified as Grand Cru Classé, divided into five growth levels from First Growth to Fifth Growth. The classification was based largely on the market prices the wines had consistently achieved since around 1750. The original First Growth estates were Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, and Château Haut-Brion. In a historic revision of the classification in 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was elevated to First Growth status, joining this prestigious group and becoming the only estate ever promoted within the 1855 Classification.
